PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY                                                                                                                       

Ian Torney has served as an athletics coach, primarily of soccer at the youth, high school, collegiate, regional and national levels.  He has a great depth of experience teaching and coaching, and in athletics administration, with over 30 years working in private secondary school education and nearly two decades of involvement with US Youth Soccer.  He is a skilled professional, an esteemed teacher and coach, and a respected member of the New England soccer community.  Coach Torney is available to work with your soccer team, as a consultant or coach, or for goalkeeper training - scroll down to see "Hire Coach Torney" information.

COACHING EXPERIENCE                                                                                                                       

Milton Academy, Milton MA (2012-present): ASSOCIATE COACH, Boys Varsity Soccer.  N.E.P.S.S.A. Championship Class A Tournament qualifiers in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 - Class A Finalists in 2014, and Class A New England Champions in 2015.

Express Soccer Club, Concord, NH (2010-2012): As the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR and DIRECTOR OF COACHING oversee all aspects of the club, including budget, staffing, scheduling, curriculum, facilities and fundraising, and advise the Board.

Independent School League - Boys Soccer (1991-2012): As DIRECTOR (1998-2010): pioneered and confirmed the three-man referee system for the league that is now the standard throughout WENEPPSA; created a website for current standings and league history.  See islboyssoccer.com

St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH (1991-2012): As the BOYS VARSITY SOCCER HEAD COACH (1991-2011) the longest tenured and arguably the most accomplished soccer coach in St. Paul’s School history.  Led pre-season tours to England in 2009, 2002, 2000 and 1997, to Canada in 2004 and 1999, and to Ireland in 1992.  St. Paul’s/Eton Cup winners in 2009, 2003 and 2000.  I.S.L. Weidergott Improvement Plate winners in 2000, 1998 and 1995.  I.S.L. Founders Cup winners in 2006, 2005 and 1992.  I.S.L. Gummere Cup Champions in 2000.  N.E.P.S.S.A. Championship Tournament qualifiers in 2007, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1998, and 1992.  Established the St. Paul’s/Eton Cup (2006).  Established the Spotswood Cup (2000). Anderson/Gillespie Cup winners in 1997.  Honored as Coach of the 1997 All-New England All-Star Game.  BOYS JV HOCKEY ASSISTANT COACH (1992/93-1993/94).  GIRLS JV LACROSSE ASSISTANT COACH (2008).  BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE ASSISTANT COACH (1992).

Concord Recreation Youth Soccer, Concord, NH (2008-2009): HEAD COACH U6/U7, U9/U10 Teams.

New England Preparatory Schools Soccer Association (1999-2009): served on and advised the Boys Soccer Championship Tournament Committee.

New Hampshire Soccer Association Olympic Development Program (1992-2009): As DIRECTOR OF COACHING (1999-2009) revitalized and re-organized the program, with administrative responsibilities encompassing scheduling, budget, curriculum, sponsorship, web design, fundraising, staffing, player recruitment, organizing and directing symposiums, tournaments, college workshops, and mini-camps, and working with both USYS Region 1 Staff and US Soccer National Staff.  Served as Boys U-16 State Team HEAD COACH (1994-1999), and as Boys U-15 State Team ASSISTANT COACH (1992-1993).  See www.soccernh.com/odp.

Pre-Season Soccer Academy, St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH (July 1997): FOUNDER and CO-DIRECTOR, run in conjunction with Tony Dicicco’s Soccer Plus Goalkeeper Camp.

United States Soccer Federation (1994-2000): SITE COORDINATOR for the US Soccer National Coaching School, Concord, NH (1996-1999).  SITE COORDINATOR for the 1998 US Soccer Festival, NH (1998). Hold both a USSF “A” Coaching License (1996) and National Youth License (2000).

New England College, Henniker, NH (1992-1994): ASSISTANT COACH for Men’s Lacrosse – Cox League Champions in 1992 and 1993.

Pomfret School, Pomfret, CT (1986-1991): As the BOYS VARSITY SOCCER HEAD COACH (1987-1989) won the S.E.N.E. Co-Championship in 1988.  As the BOYS VARSITY LACROSSE HEAD COACH (1988-1991) led a pre-season tour to South Carolina 1990.  Honored as the S.E.N.E. Man-of-the-Year 1990, and honored as Coach of the 1990 All-New England All-Star Game.  GIRLS JV HOCKEY HEAD COACH (1986/87-1990/91).  BOYS JV LACROSSE HEAD COACH (1987).

TEAM TRAINING SESSIONS: for any club team or organized soccer group; fee - $100 an hour plus mileage.

Coach Torney will come to your team's training session, and run your practice. Training topics include:

  • Individual Ball Skills Techniques

  • Passing, Receiving and Turning Techniques

  • Shooting and Finishing Techniques

  • Possession and Speed of Play Techniques and Tactics

  • Counter-Attack Techniques and Tactics

  • Crossing and Finishing Techniques and Tactics

  • Individual and Team Defending Techniques and Tactics

  • Individual and Team Attacking Techniques and Tactics

  • Functional Training within the Team, including: Goalkeepers; Defenders; Midfielders, Strikers; and Training the Playmaker

 

TEAM MATCH ANALYSIS: for any club team or organized soccer group; fee - $100 an hour plus mileage.

Coach Torney is available for match analysis sessions - he will come to watch your team compete, and provide a comprehensive written analysis of the match, and will provide recommendations for your team. Analysis topics include:

  • Defensive strengths analysis

  • Defensive improvements recommendations

  • Attacking strengths analysis

  • Attacking improvements recommendations

  • Team Tactics analysis and recommendations

 

INDIVIDUAL GOALKEEPER TRAINING :for the beginner, or for the elite soccer goalkeeper; fee - $150 a session, per individual, or for up to a group of three goalkeepers of similar age and ability.

Coach Torney will train goalkeepers for a series of exclusive 90-minute sessions (a minimum of three sessions is required). Training topics include:

  • Session 1: catching, distribution and footwork technique.

  • Session 2: diving, punching and parrying saves.

  • Session 3: dealing with crosses and break-aways.

  • Session 4: training goalkeepers within team training, and tactical decisions within the game (requires team-mates and an additional $75 travel fee - Coach Torney will come to your team practice and run training to focus on the functional aspects of goalkeeping within a full team training session).

At the conclusion of the allotted sessions, all participating goalkeepers will be provided with a comprehensive written evaluation.

Schedule sessions at your convenience - anytime during the day in the summer or on weekends, or afternoons or evenings during the winter and spring (no sessions can be scheduled during the fall season). Sessions can be scheduled once-a-week, or once-a-month, or other alternative sequence. Scheduling subject to availability, on a first-come-first-serve basis.  Fields for Goalkeeper Training must be arranged by the participants, or can be arranged by the clinician at an additional fields rental cost.
